Our Mission

The mission of the Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Department in Sumter County is to empower students with unique abilities to reach their fullest potential—academically, socially, and vocationally. We are committed to fostering excellence by identifying individual needs and delivering high-quality, evidence-based services and supports.

Through the collaborative efforts of skilled educators, engaged families, and a supportive community, we strive to ensure that every student is prepared for lifelong success as a responsible citizen and productive member of a global society. Our department is dedicated to cultivating inclusive learning environments where all students are valued, challenged, and inspired to achieve the highest standards.

Overview

The Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Department of Sumter County School District provides specialized support and services to students with disabilities (SWD) from birth through age 21. Our goal is to help each student succeed in school and prepare for life after graduation.

We offer a range of services in different settings, including general education classrooms, resource rooms, special programs, and hospital/homebound instruction. Whenever possible, students receive services at their neighborhood school. Each student’s support is guided by an Individual Education Plan (IEP), which is developed to meet their specific needs.

Our team includes dedicated professionals who work closely with families, teachers, and community partners to ensure students receive the tools and instruction they need to grow and achieve. We also collaborate with state and regional programs such as the Florida Diagnostic and Learning Resources System (FDLRS), ACCESS Project, Project 10, SEDNET, and others to strengthen our services.

The ESE Department is responsible for identifying students who may need support, evaluating their needs, determining eligibility, and making sure they receive a free and appropriate public education as required by law.

We believe that strong communication and teamwork between families and schools are essential. When we work together, our students can reach their full potential.

Our vision: Building Tomorrow’s Leaders Today.
