English for Speakers of Other Language Program (ESOL) Placement
When enrolling a child in the district, parents or guardians complete a Home Language Survey (HLS). If any of the responses indicate that a language other than English is spoken at home or by the student, a follow-up assessment is conducted to determine eligibility for the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Program. Students who qualify through this screening process are provided services through the ESOL Program to support their English language development. The WIDA Screener is used to assess and place potential English Language Learners (ELLs). This evaluation includes an aural/oral component and reading and writing subtests from a norm-referenced assessment, all approved by the Florida Department of Education.
ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 Assessment
ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 is a secure, annual assessment designed to measure English language proficiency for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade who have been identified as English Language Learners (ELLs). Administered in member states of the WIDA Consortium, this assessment helps schools track students’ progress in learning academic English.
The assessment is based on the WIDA English Language Development Standards and evaluates students' skills in four key language areas: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 is available exclusively to states within the WIDA Consortium.
English Language Learner (ELL) Committee
The ELL Committee is a school-based team dedicated to supporting the academic success of English Language Learner (ELL) students. This committee meets to review and make recommendations regarding instructional programs and any other educational decisions that may impact an ELL student's learning experience. Committee members may include ESOL teachers, an administrator or their designee, a guidance counselor, a social worker, a school psychologist, or other educational professionals as needed. Parents are always invited to participate in ELL Committee meetings concerning their child.
