Purpose of the ESOL Parent Leadership Council
The ESOL Parent Leadership Council (PLC) exists to support and empower families of English Language Learner (ELL) students by fostering collaboration between parents, schools, and the district. The Council provides a platform for meaningful involvement and guidance in decisions that impact ELL students and their educational experience.
Goals of the Council
- Support the Wellbeing of ELL Students
Promote the academic, social, and emotional success of ELLs in schools, at home, and within the community. - Promote Academic Achievement
Advocate for and monitor the progress of ELL students to ensure they reach their full academic potential. - Advise on the District ELL Plan
Provide meaningful input and feedback prior to the submission of the district’s ELL Plan to the Florida Department of Education. - Encourage Collaboration
Build and strengthen relationships among parents, school staff, and district personnel to promote shared understanding and decision-making. - Foster Professional Partnerships
Develop respectful, professional relationships between families and educators that support student success. - Empower Parents Through Training
Offer workshops and informational sessions for parents, educators, and community groups to build capacity and confidence in supporting ELL students. - Promote Outreach and Engagement
Ensure that ELL families are informed, welcomed, and actively involved in their children's education.
Membership
- The Council may be made up of parents or guardians of ELL students, community members, ESOL educators, school administrators, and district staff.
- A majority of members should be parents or guardians of current ELL students to ensure family voices are central.
- Membership is voluntary, and all interested parents are encouraged to participate.
Meetings
- Meetings are held regularly throughout the school year.
- Agendas may include updates on ESOL programs, parent trainings, feedback opportunities, and planning events.
- Interpreters and translated materials will be provided as needed to support inclusive participation.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Parents: Share input, participate in meetings, attend trainings, and serve as advocates for ELL families.
- School and District Staff: Facilitate meetings, provide updates and resources, and ensure communication with all stakeholders.

Parents and community members interested in becoming involved in the ESOL Parent Leadership Council are encouraged to complete the interest form provided (via QR code or school contact). Participation is open to all who wish to support and strengthen the ELL community in Sumter County.
