Meet the Board Members

The School Board of Sumter County is composed of five members and are elected to four year terms.  While the member lives in their represented district, they are elected at large and serve the district as a whole. School Board offices are non-partisan.  Board Members can be contacted through the Superintendent's Office or through their direct information available from the Supervisor of Elections Office.

  • Governor Rick Scott appointed Mrs. Sally Moss to the Sumter County School Board in April 2018, filling the seat vacated by the late Mr. Haydn Evans. During the November 2018 general election, Mrs. Moss was elected and continues to serve the citizens of Sumter County.

    In 1982, Mrs. Moss and her husband, Michael, moved to San Diego, California from the Miami area. While in California, she was a nationally recognized realtor with Prudential California Realty and assisted her husband with his financial planning practice. They relocated to The Villages in 2004.

    In 2006, Mrs. Moss was elected to The Villages Community Development District 6, Board of Supervisors, for a four-year term. She was reelected and served twelve years on the Board of Supervisors. She maintained the Board Chairman distinction for eleven years.  

    Since being elected to the Sumter County School Board, Sally served as the tournament director for the 36th Annual 2020 ‘Scholarships for Graduates Golf Tournament’. This tournament provides Lake Sumter State College scholarships to graduating seniors at South Sumter High School and Wildwood Middle High School. In August 2020, Mrs. Moss organized the first ‘Sumter Schools Supply Drive’. This supply drive is now an annual event, providing school supplies and financial donations for the students of Sumter County public schools. In 2019, Mrs. Moss arranged with the ‘100 Telescope Project’, for telescopes with tripods to be endowed to each of the district’s elementary and middle schools.

    Mrs. Moss currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the Florida Public Assets for Liquidity Management Investment Trust, sponsored by the Florida School Board Association and the Florida Association of Districts School Superintendents. She also represents the Sumter County School Board when serving on the Value Adjustment Board, the Lake-Sumter Metropolitan Planning Organization Board, and the Lake-Sumter Transportation Disadvantaged Coordinating Board. In December 2020, Mrs. Moss became a Certified Board Member through the Florida School Board Association and now mentors novice school board members throughout the State of Florida.

  • Brett Sherman was elected to the school board in 2020, he is a lifelong resident of Sumter County and a graduate of Sumter County Public Schools.  He attended Bushnell Elementary, South Sumter Middle School and South Sumter High School before graduating from Florida State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Business with a major in Hospitality Administration and Professional Golf Management. 

    Brett and his family reside in beautiful Lake Panasoffkee.  His wife, also a graduate of Lake Panasoffkee Elementary, South Sumter Middle School and South Sumter High School, has been a guidance counselor for over ten years. 

    Brett’s commitment to education has deep roots as both his grandfather, father and mother were educators. Brett actively serves on the Sumter County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and has also served on School Improvement Committees at both South Sumter Middle School and Lake Panasoffkee Elementary. Brett has been a Certified PGA Golf Professional for fifteen years.

  • Mr. Williams was elected to the school board in 2014.  He lives in Oxford with his wife and their two children.  His wife is a graduate of South Sumter High School.

    Mr. Williams grew up in Wildwood and is a second generation graduate of Wildwood High School.  He played on the golf team and also served as the editor of the high school's yearbook.  He attended Florida State University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Business with a major in Hospitality Administration, and also Professional Golf Management.  His family's history in education in Sumter County includes his wife being an elementary school teacher, and his father being a retired educator and administrator at Wildwood High School.

    Mr. Williams is a PGA Professional with certifications in General Management, Golf Operations, and Retail Operations.  He has been working in the golf and hospitality industries for over twenty-five years.

  • Russell Hogan was appointed to the Sumter County School Board in December of 2020 by Governor Ron DeSantis.  He lives in Center Hill with his wife and children. 

    He attended Bushnell Elementary, South Sumter Middle School, and South Sumter High School. Upon graduating he entered the U.S. Navy. 

    During his first enlistment he was an Aviation Electronics Technician stationed out of Miramar, California.  In his second tour he was a certified electronics instructor and curriculum developer for the Naval Aviation Technical Training Center in Pensacola, FL.  After 8 years of service he was honorably discharged and went to work for a fiber optics firm as a technical trainer.  He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from the University of Phoenix.

    Russell returned home in 2003 to work in the family construction business which he now owns and operates as a 4th generation contractor.

  • Kathie Richard was first elected to the board in 2010 and lives near the Bevilles Corner area of Sumter County.

    She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education K-6 with an ESOL endorsement from Saint Leo University and a background of Cross-Cultural Bi-lingual studies from California State University, San Bernardino. Mrs. Richard is currently a kindergarten teacher.

    Mrs. Richard has two sons, Micah and Troye. Micah is a graduate of South Sumter High School and is an IT Professional for a defense contractor. Troye completed his entire educational career in Sumter also graduating from South Sumter High School. He is working in education while he finishes his post-secondary education.
