The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) updates the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA), reflecting our nation’s enduring commitment to providing equitable opportunities for all students. This new legislation aims to ensure that every child is equipped to graduate from high school and successfully pursue college and career paths.
ESEA introduces several important measures to enhance equitable access to educational resources. These include setting high academic standards for all students, taking decisive actions to uplift the lowest-performing schools and those with underperforming student groups, and expanding access to high-quality preschool programs.
Under subpart 1 of Title IV, Part A of the ESEA, the Student Support and Academic Enrichment (SSAE) program has been established to help achieve these objectives. The program aims to strengthen the capacity of State educational agencies (SEAs), local educational agencies (LEAs), schools, and communities by:
