Library Media Services
The primary goal of the Sumter County School District’s media centers is to support, enrich, and enhance the educational programs of each school. These centers provide a diverse range of materials across varying levels of difficulty, designed to engage students and reflect multiple perspectives. Materials include any collection of books, ebooks, periodicals, and videos accessible within the school, including classroom libraries. Selections are based on student interest, alignment with state academic standards and curriculum, and the instructional needs of both students and faculty.
Certified Educational Media Specialist Selection and Approval
All materials available to students, whether in the school or classroom library or on recommended or assigned reading lists, are selected and or approved by a certified educational media specialist in accordance with Section 1006.28(2)(d)(1), Florida Statutes.
Visit Your School Media Center Collections
Sumter County Schools provides open access to the titles available to students. You can browse school media collections day or night by accessing our Destiny Media System. We also make searching for Accelerated Reader books fun and easy using the AR Bookfinder.
Florida Gale Databases
We are honored to provide our teachers and staff access to Florida Gale Databases, which provides free access to statewide Gale research databases, including academic journals, local newspapers, and reference e-books through local public libraries or the State Library of Florida.
Limit Media Access
Parents who would like to limit their child’s access to specific books may complete and submit a Limiting Media Access Form to their child’s school.
Request for Reconsideration of Instructional Materials
Parents of students enrolled in Sumter County School District or residents of the county may object to specific materials available in a school media center. Concerns should first be addressed with the school principal or designee. If the issue is not resolved at the school level, the individual may submit a formal objection using the district’s Request for Reconsideration of Instructional Materials Form, in accordance with School Board Policy and Florida Statute s.1006.28(2)(d)1,2.
