Assessments

At Sumter County Schools, the Curriculum Department oversees the coordination and implementation of state and local assessments to support student learning. Through effective management of the testing process and analysis of assessment data, the department equips educators with valuable insights to measure student progress and guide instruction. Our goal is to ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed by using assessment results to inform teaching practices and promote academic growth across all grade levels.

State Assessments

Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) Assessments

Florida’s standardized ELA and Math assessments align with the B.E.S.T. Standards. The FAST program monitors student progress in ELA (VPK–Grade 10) and Math (VPK–Grade 8) three times a year. Additional B.E.S.T. assessments include Writing (Grades 4–10) and EOC exams in Algebra 1 and Geometry.

End-of-Course (EOC) Assessments

EOC assessments are computer-based tests that measure student achievement of Florida’s academic standards for specific courses. Each assessment is aligned to the content outlined in the course description, ensuring students are evaluated on what they’ve been taught.

Statewide Science Assessment

The Statewide Science Assessment measures student achievement of the Florida's State Academic Standards in science. Students in grades 5 and 8 participate in the statewide science assessment. Achievement Levels for Science were established in 2012 through a standard setting process.

Access for ELLS

Florida uses the ACCESS for ELLs suite of assessments as a tool to measure English Language Learners (ELLs) proficiency in the English language; thus, ensuring the skills needed in school to achieve at high levels, academically.

Florida Civic Literacy Exam (FCLE)

The Florida Civic Literacy Exam (FCLE) is a computer-based assessment that measures students’ civic literacy knowledge. In 2021, legislation was passed that requires all students enrolled in a U.S. Government course in high school to take the assessment (see s. 1003.4282(3)(d), F.S.).

Florida Alternate Assessment

All Florida students participate in the state’s assessment and accountability system. The Florida Alternate Assessment (FAA) is designed for students whose participation in the general statewide assessment program is not appropriate, even with accommodations. The FAA is fully aligned to Florida’s alternate academic achievement standards, otherwise known as Access Points. Access Points reflect the key concepts of the Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking (B.E.S.T.) Standards for English language arts and mathematics and Florida’s statewide standards for science and social studies. They ensure access to the essence or core intent of the standards that apply to all students in the same grade, but at reduced levels of complexity.
