Sumter Surpasses the State Average on State Assessments


Sumter County is among the top school districts on state assessments, according to the preliminary testing data released last week by the Department of Education. The data shows the percent of students who are proficient by state, district, and schools. These categories show how the students on tests compared to all other students in Florida who took the same test. Students in Sumter exceeded the state averages in grades 3-10 on the English Language Arts FSA, grades 3-8 on the Mathematics FSA, and grade 5 and 8 on the statewide Science Assessment! End of Course exam results for Algebra I Geometry, Biology, Civics, and US History were also above the reported state average!


School Superintendent, Rick Shirley said, “During the 2020-2021 school year, our administrators, teachers, and students faced unprecedented challenges and obstacles. Despite these barriers, our teachers and students proved that (safety and) academics were at the forefront. Teachers and students alike were dedicated to maintaining a level of normalcy and achieving academic success. The 2021 data proves that the hard work and dedication of Sumter County’s administrators, teachers, and students was reasonably successful. Overall, 95 percent of all tested categories are among the top 25 of the 67 districts in the state of Florida; 54 percent are among the top 10 of the 67 districts in Florida.” Shirley further commented, “However, we have some areas that need lots attention and will redouble our efforts to close those gaps.”


The highest state ranked grade levels for English Language Arts include Grade 3 – 2nd, Grade 4 – 3rd, Grade 8 and 9 – 5th, Grade 7 – 7th, and Grade 5 – 8th. The highest ranked grade levels in the Mathematics assessment include Grades 4 and 5 – 7th, Grade 3 – 8th, and Grade 6 – 10th. Grade 5 Science results ranked 5th in the state and Grade 8 Science ranked 9th. Sumter’s Algebra I results ranked 7th. Sumter’s Civics and US History were ranked 19th and 21st, respectively. Sumter outranked all of the surrounding counties in many areas including: Grade 3-10 ELA, Grades 3-7 Math, Algebra I, Grades 5 and 8 Science, and both Civics and US History.


Continuous improvement on all state assessments is a priority for the school district. Sumter County will continue to provide highly effective, impactful, and intentional professional development opportunities to all staff members. Sumter County is committed to monitoring student progress to account for any missed learning due to the pandemic.
