Subject: Big Springs Regional Science Fair Results
The 2021 Big Springs Regional Science Fair brought out the best and brightest middle and high school students to share their science research, experimental designs, and interesting conclusions with a host of judges from a variety of professions. Sumter County students joined the virtual competition with students from Marion County.
Eager young researchers from South Sumter Middle, South Sumter High, Wildwood Middle High, and The Villages Charter School submitted 43 projects to virtual science fair. The projects were placed in thirteen different categories ranging from Behavioral to Intelligent Machines to Engineering to Animal Sciences. After an intense week of anticipation while virtual judging took place, the results proved to be very exciting for Sumter County participants!
Of the 43 Sumter County projects competing in the 2021 Big Springs Regional Science Fair, 10 projects earned first place ribbons, 15 projects earned second place ribbons, and 7 projects earned third place ribbons. For a full list of awards please go to https://www.marionschools.net/Page/91424.
To reach the next level of competition, the highest scoring projects were judged in a second round. Based on this finalist judging, a team was selected to compete in the Virtual Florida State Science and Engineering Fair. The 2021 team of 32 projects includes 17 projects representing Sumter County! There were 9 projects from the senior and 8 projects from the junior division.
At the Florida State Science and Engineering Fair, the following Sumter County students will once again share their research, experimental designs, data, and conclusions: from South Sumter Middle School- Alynza McBride, Jaycee Mueller; from Wildwood Middle High School- Julia Temple, Aryca Zapata, Shyanne Durst, Emma Strickland, Noella Lipham, Jose Carvajal-Beltran, Trinity Skaggs, Delbie Zayas Rosado, Michael Vick, Destiny Gosselin, Kadie Mariano, Kaitlyn Fort; from the Villages Charter High School-Olivia Williams; from South Sumter High School-Cheyenne Shirley, Savannah Stephens.
Sumter County School District affiliates with the International Science and Engineering Fair. Through the affiliation, the district is eligible to enter five projects to compete with more than 1500 students from over 50 countries. Representing Sumter County are: Cheyenne Shirley, Savannah Stephens, Michael Vick, Kadie Mariano, and Delbie Zayas Rosado.
The guidance, encouragement, and coaching of the adult sponsors at each school as well as parents must also be recognized. School coordinators this year include Shelly Paulinyce and Michelle Alberto of South Sumter Middle School, Shelbie Wiley of South Sumter High School, Monica Vinas and Lauri Siverson of The Villages Charter School and Emily Keeler of Wildwood Middle High School.
