Re: Earth Day Celebration –Save the Date
The 12th Annual Earth Day Celebration, a partnership activity of the Sumter County School Board and CEMEX, is just around the corner! The celebration is scheduled for Saturday, April 13, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the CEMEX Center Hill mine on CR 48 in Center Hill.
It promises to be a wonderful day for all ages with the famous Grumpy’ s ice cream and Ring Power supplying and cooking up hot dogs. Meet animal ambassadors from the Florida International Teaching Zoo and learn all about bats. SECO will be on site to assist consumers with energy saving strategies. Sand Lovers sand sculpting will host sandcastle building classes this year! New this year visitors will help with a Legacy Planting project of 500 native plants and trees.
Many local environmental agencies such as UF/IFAS Extension Service, National Resources Conservation Service, Florida Native Plant Society, Sumter County Master Gardeners, and the Florida Forest Service will be sharing useful information about topics from water conservation to preventing pollution. The ever-popular Kid’s Fossil Dig will be open for children ages 3 – third grade. The Same in Lame Jazz Ambassadors and the South Sumter High School NNDDC chapter will open the event with the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem. Choral and band groups from South Sumter Middle School, Wildwood Middle High School, South Sumter High School and Wildwood Elementary School will once again perform favorite songs.
The Sumter Environmental Education Center, the S.E.E.C., is the result of a partnership between the Sumter County School Board and CEMEX. School children from the area participate in programming at the Center and are involved in habitat restoration projects on the property as they learn about protecting and conserving natural resources.
THE EVENT IS A NON-SMOKING, NO PETS VENUE. Please leave pets home.
