Mrs. Miller

Welcome Aboard to Mrs. Miller’s 3rd Grade Class 2023-2024

I am very excited to have the opportunity to teach your child this year. Thank you for your trust and patience during this school year. I just wanted to take this time to tell you about the curriculum, behavior expectations, homework, and the Accelerated Reading (AR) Program.

Curriculum

Your child will be educated in the areas of Reading, Language Arts, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies. They will attend PE daily and music once a week. For a complete list of standards, please visit our district website at www.sumter.k12.fl.us.

The grading system is: 90-100 A

                                    89-80 B

                                    79-70 C

                                    69-60 D

                                    59-below F

 Behavior Expectations

Our classroom abides by the following rules. They are:

  1. Listen when others are talking.
  2. Follow directions.
  3. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
  4. Work quietly and do not disturb others.
  5. Show respect for school and personal property.
  6. Work and play in a safe manner.

Because we expect our students to be on their best behavior every day, if you do not get a note or phone call from me, assume that your child has had acceptable behavior for that day.

Positive behavior rewards may include: Osprey Wings, sit next to a friend, read in the outdoor classroom, and/or candy.

Poor behavior consequences include: verbal warnings, time out, a note, a telephone call home, and/or conduct. Any extreme behavior such as violence, disrespect, foul language, fighting, etc. will receive a conduct and office referral.

Homework

Your child will be expected to complete his/her homework each week. Your child will have math homework each night and should start immediately learning multiplication facts. For reading, your child will be responsible for reading two AR books each night and test on them the next morning at school.  Parents might place the spelling and vocabulary handout on the refrigerator for studying purposes. Weekly spelling and vocabulary tests will be scheduled in the student planner. There may be other assignments for Science and Social Studies that will be given for your child to complete which will also be noted in the student planner. Please check the student planner nightly for notes or assignments, and place homework in the blue folder to be returned the next day.

Accelerated Reader (AR) Program (Library Book)

Our school participates in the Accelerated Reader Program and is part of the ELA grading system. Your child will have the opportunity to go to the school library each day after testing their AR book. Please make sure your child has read his/her nonfiction book a minimum of three times. They will take a short quiz about the book the next day and exchange it for a new book. Third grade students will be expected to read 60% AR nonfiction and 40% AR fiction books every nine weeks. It is very important that you ask your child comprehension questions before, during, and after reading. This assesses whether or not your child understands what has been read. Such questions include:

  1. Who are the characters? Are they the same/different?
  2. What is the setting? (time and place)
  3. How did the character change from the beginning to the end?
  4. What happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story?
  5. Is the story fiction or nonfiction?
  6. What kind of information did you learn from the book?
  7. What is another word, for example: feast?

I hope this helps answer some questions you may have about your child’s school year. As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about how to further help your child. Email suzanne.miller@sumter.k12.fl.us  voicemail extension 61534.

Thank you for taking time and supporting your child on this journey. This is truly a parent/teacher/student effort. Your involvement will have a lasting effect on your child. Please help me create a positive start to their education.
