Degrees and Certifications:

Mr. Richard Commerford

I grew up in McLean Virginia where I attended Langley High School.  Where I earned an Army ROTC scholarship. After graduating high school, I attended college at The Virginia Military Institute. Where I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army. I spent 4 years on active duty as an Armor (tank) officer leaving as a Captain. I then moved to Houston Texas and went to work as quality assurance manager for a check printing company. I worked there for 11 years eventually becoming a regional vice-president. I then worked various management jobs with different companies until my wife and I started our own art business. She painted and I traveled the country selling her artwork (I have some in my room if you would like to see). 10 years ago, we gave up our business and began teaching. She is an elementary school art teacher and I became a high school teacher. I have taught science, algebra and history here at Wildwood. Along the way, I have earned two masters degrees. A Master of Business Administration from Kennesaw University and a Master of Educational Leadership from West Florida. I have three children and three dogs.

Recommended Read:

A book I recommend for 9th grade students to read is The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancey.  It is my favorite book of all time. It captures aspects of the Cold War between the U.S. and Soviet Union and the espionage war they fought perfectly. It was so well researched and written that the FBI actually investigated the author because of the accuracy.  It was Clancey’s first best seller and in my opinion his best work.
